Rhino Spins Future Retro Sounds with Remixed ’80s Jams
*
While the idea of DJs retooling classic rock tunes for dancefloor readiness is nothing new–after all, no less than hip-hop originator Afrika Bambaataa was known for mashing up AC/DC and Led Zeppelin in his late ’70s sets alongside funky James Brown breakbeats, Kraftwerk’s mechanized beats and early rap hits–there’s always fresh ways to reintroduce old school tunes to the next generation.
Rhino Records capitalizes on the idea with Future Retro, a January 24 release that takes synth-flavored, alt-rock favorites like the Cure’s "The Walk," New Order’s "Bizarre Love Triangle" and Echo & the Bunnymen’s "Lips Like Sugar" and gives them the new millennium spin by current club stars Richard X (producer of polyglot hip-hopper M.I.A.), the Crystal Method, Adam Freeland and more.
Other highlights from the compilation, already storming sound systems across the land, include Static Revenger tweaking out the INXS gem "Need You Tonight" and Tiga giving the beatdown to Depeche Mode’s "Shake the Disease. Here’s the full list of raved-out rockers:
* "The Walk" — The Cure (Infusion Remix)
* "Situation" — Yaz (Richard X Remix)
* "Lips Like Sugar" — Echo & The Bunnymen (Way Out West Remix Edit)
* "Need You Tonight" — INXS (Static Revenger Mix Edit)
* "Shake the Disease" — Depeche Mode (Tiga Remix)
* "A Little Respect" — Erasure (Jaded Alliance ‘Electrospect’ Remix)
* "New Song" — Howard Jones (Peter Black and Hardrock Striker Mix Edit)
* "Forever Young" — Alphaville (Hamel Album Mix)
* "Bizarre Love Triangle" — New Order (The Crystal Method Extended Mix)
* "White Lines (Don’t Do It) — Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel (Elite Force Mix)
* "Girl U Want" — Devo (Black Light Odyssey Mix)
* "Nowhere Girl" — B-Movie (Adam Freeland Remix)
* "Boy" — Book Of Love (DJ Irene Rockstar Mix)
* "Suedehead" — Morrissey (Sparks Mix)
