Monolake is Robert Henke, a Berlin-based producer of sophisticated electronic dance music that represents the ideal synthesis of computer-driven musical experiments and dancefloor rhythms. Emerging from Berlin's legendary dub-techno collective Basic Channel/Chain Reaction, Monolake pushes the buttons that the rest of the world will be pushing in years to come - both literally and figuratively.
Since Monolake's dub-drenched debut album "Hong Kong" in 1997, Henke has forged an independent path, establishing his own label and exploring the depths of the Monolake sound, while remaining at the forefront of the creation and marketing of music software (most notably Ableton's popular "Live" package, spearheaded by his former partner in Monolake, Gerhard Behles). Within Monolake's sonic world resides a bevy of scattered complex percussive sounds layered into subtle atmosphere, all with a solid rhythmic underpinning. It's a musical space that has provided him a great deal of room for experimentation and variation, and through which he has become a globally renowned performer, having played throughout Europe, North America, Japan, and Australia over the past 9 years. Five full-length albums later, the Monolake sound is well-established and ever-expanding, and his production and performance modes continue to adapt, seeking the ideal means of musical and visual expression.
For an artist with such attention to the intricacies of sonic space, and an aesthetic that's ice-clean, sleek, and dark, we're excited to present this event at Sonotheque, a venue with those same aesthetic qualities that's well-equipped to showcase the full spectrum of sound within Monolake's music. We invite you to join us for Monolake's highly-anticipated return to Chicago!

Part of the santiago based duo Detalles (whose debut LP found a home on germany's Kompakt distributed Traum label), native chicagoan Kate Simko has been making waves as of late with her solo live performances alongside heavyweights such as Michael Mayer, M83, Reinhard Voight, Four Tet and Ellen Allien. Simko started playing piano way back at the age of six, and after a brief stint studying classical piano at the University of Miami, she transferred to Northwestern University's music technology program to focus on electronic composition. While at NU, Simko served for two years as the WNUR's Streetbeat producer, overseeing their slew of electronic and hip-hop shows, in addition to hosting her own. Simko moved to Santiago, Chile to study composition in 2001 where she met her partner in Detalles, Andreas Bucci. The result was the duo's 2003 full-length album "Shapes of Summer" which recieved critical acclaim from magazines such as The Wire, Xlr8r, and Urb.
2005 has been another busy year for Simko, with her return to WNUR, a bi-weekly residency at Subterranean (Wake-Up!), another Detalles LP in the works, a remix of Phillip Glass on the Glasscuts compilation (due in September), and a new project for chocolate industries. Kate Simko's delicately crafted laptop performance, a subtle and sophisticated twist on the classic techno sound, will be the perfect compliment to Monolake's return to Chicago.

Known for his undisputed skills on the decks, his exquisite selectionof fine techno (& related material) and his long running radio show - Clinically Inclined - on WNUR, Dave is one of the dedicated individuals that keeps great music alive in our fair city. His ability to delve into the depths of techno history and place it side-by-side with best records of today reveals the relative timeless nature of techno in the electronic music pantheon. His DJ exploits have seen him performing alongside an impressive array of talent, including Surgeon, Heiko Laux, John Tejada, Dan Bell, Technasia, Monolake, Kit Clayton, Phoenicia, Richard Devine, Ectomorph, the Advent, and John Selway, among others. Trust us, you don't want to miss one of Chicago's best djs.
>chris widman
Chris Widman is a DJ that defies easy classification: his cohesive sets intertwine records from across the electronic music spectrum. A host of the weekly radio program abstract science since it's inception in 1997 and a DJ since 1995, Widman's multifaceted approach has led to appearences with noted artists such as Amon Tobin, Jaga Jazzist, The Orb, The Cinematic Orchestra, Mr. Scruff, John Tejada, Apparat, Ulrich Schnauss, M83, Telefon Tel Aviv, Phon.o, Adam Johnson and Heiroglyphic Being. Lately you'll find Chris at his ongoing monthly residency at sonotheque—Funk the Mental, happening the 1st Wednesday of each month—as well as working feverishly in the studio on original music and exploring a new found love: west african percussion. Catch Chris on abstract science radio—exploring innovative electronic music and it's roots every Thursday 10pm-2am CST on WLUW-Chicago 88.7FM.
