Greetings to you on this fine April day.
We are pleased to announce the brand new CD from JIM AND JENNIE & the Pinetops, "Rivers Roll On By," is being released TODAY!!! Look for it in all retail outlets near you starting Tuesday, April 26th, as well as on our website.
For years, you've known them as a top shelf bluegrass unit, and for their backing talents on Neko Case's recent live CD, but it is time for them to really stretch out and show just what talents they are. "Rivers Roll on By" weaves together southern folk and rock idioms into an irresistible and shadowy space between the Harry Smith creak of our American musical backwaters and the easy-on-the-way-down psychedelic vibe of the Fairport Convention and Buffalo Springfield.
Joining them this time is Brad Hutchinson's "Banjocaster" – an instrument that can sound like a piano, electric guitar and might even be able to do your laundry, it's THAT versatile. It adds a whole new dimension to their arsenal. This album has the special quality of tapping into the primal kind of universal spookiness and sadness that hangs in the clouds and that seeps into the trees, the hills, the seas and the bars. On top of it all is Jennie Benford’s voice, as fragile and powerful as a Walker Evans dustbowl photograph.
A daring record. Respectful of tradition but not restrained by it, it is lyrically and sonically unafraid to carry it to fascinating new places.
Here're a few words of praise that have already come our way:
"J&J charge a zing of electricity through a mostly dusty genre. Not your average hipster-cum-folksters, they bring the noise and the spunk." - CMJ
"The energetic harmony singing can raise the hairs on your neck - The tunes sound simultaneously timeless and old as the hills." -– Chicago Reader
"Jim and Jennie and the Pinetops are raging against the dying of the light while at the same time dragging the carcass around with them." -– Pitchfork
"They take traditional bluegrass and add a punk rock sensibility that works. Jim & Jennie's efforts are the most exciting country/folk/bluegrass body of work I have heard in a long time." -– Maverick
"Vivid and memorable, 'Rivers Roll On By' is a mature and moving work, a real keeper." - Barnes & Noble Reviews
